Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, which follows the lunar cycle. Since the Islamic calendar is based on the moon, the dates of Ramadan change each year, and it lasts for 29 to 30 days.
Ramadan is a month of fasting to deepen mindfulness of God, prayer, self-reflection, and to focus on kindness, patience, and building community.
🌙Inclusive Ramadan Dining: Supporting Both Fasting & Non-Fasting Residents in Aged Care
Aged care providers have an opportunity to foster inclusivity by offering culturally appropriate dining experiencesfor both fasting and non-fasting residents.
Non-Muslim residents may want to join Iftar or Suhoor meals, while some Muslim residents may be unable to fast due to health conditions. A well-planned approach ensures everyone can participate and enjoy traditional meals while maintaining nutritional balance.
Key Recommendations for Aged Care Facilities:
✔ Offer a Cultural Dining Experience
- Introduce themed Iftar nights with traditional dishesto enhance community spirit.
- Organise Ramadan-friendly menus with hydrating and nourishing optionssuitable for both fasting and non-fasting residents.
✔ Provide Alternative Meal Timings
- For non-fasting residents, allow them to enjoy Ramadan-inspired dishes at regular mealtimes, rather than only at Iftar or Suhoor.
- Offer an “Iftar-inspired dinner” option for non-fasting residents who want to join the celebrationswithout delaying their mealtime.
✔ Create Balanced Menu Options
- Focus on hydrating foods (soups, yogurt, fresh fruits) and dense energy sources (dates, lentils, whole grains, lean proteins). ✔ Respect Dietary Restrictions & Health Needs
- Provide textured modified meal options for residents with dysphagia.
