When supporting health in aged care, nutrition is critical—but food is far more than just a meal. Mealtimes play a powerful role in daily life, offering nourishment, connection, dignity, and enjoyment.

As Menu & Mealtime Review (MMR) projects continue across the country, one Plena Healthcare dietitian reflects on meaningful experiences from residential aged care homes throughout Australia.

Behind the scenes of a menu & mealtime review: Each MMR project goes beyond standard nutrition assessments, with a two-day on-site visit where the dietitian observes (and tastes!) how meals are prepared, served, and experienced, while assessing all aspects of nutrition, hydration, dining experience, and supportive policies.

Every bite counts: Food in aged care is closely tied to well-being. MMRs focus on the whole dining experience, including:

· Menu variety: Offering diverse, culturally appropriate, and resident-preferred options.

· Presentation: Ensuring meals look appealing and appetizing.

· Portion sizes: Balancing needs and preferences in line with Australian Nutrition Guidelines.

· Dining environments: Creating welcoming, respectful spaces.

· Resident engagement: Gathering feedback to guide ongoing improvements.

Achieving change through teamwork: Plena Healthcare dietitians work closely with aged care teams—chefs, kitchen staff, careers, and managers—to improve mealtime quality. Each review highlights what’s working, identifies practical improvements aligned with the Aged Care Standards, and supports more person-centered dining experiences.

Through MMR projects, dietitians help ensure every resident can enjoy meals that bring comfort, dignity, and joy. Because everyone deserves to experience the joy of food. 💙
